Descriptions
World
Music Drumming Level 1 - (may
be repeated)
Offered at the following sites: TX, FL, WI, WA, CA, KS, MD, PA
For
teachers, counselors, community recreation leaders,
church musicians, and players who would like to learn
the basics of African and Caribbean drumming, singing,
and moving. This course is primarily based on the
publications,
World Music Drumming (Hal Leonard) by Dr.
Will Schmid (past president, MENC; author). Participants
will learn how to implement and teach a course or experience
in World Music Drumming. Assisting Dr. Schmid is the
course will be Sowah Mensah (Ghanaian Master Drummer,
Macalaster College, MN), Josh Ryan ( drumming from
Ghana and Caribbean specialist, Baldwin-Wallace College,
OH), J.S.Kofi Gbolonyo (Ewe Drummer, U. of Pittsburgh)
and Teaching Staff: Paul Corbiere,
Nellie Hill, Margaret Jerz, Hong Le, James Mader, Cindy
Mayo, Debbie Montague, and Michelle Quigg (all experienced
public school teachers). Teaching Assitants include
Patty Bourne, Kathy Brink, Chad Criag, Rich Dubé. amd
Eileen Freedman. See workshop locations above for staff
teaching at that site.
The Level 1 class assumes no prior experience with drumming.
Those with no background and individuals with prior
experience (even trained percussionists) will both benefit
from learning how the World Music Drumming curriculum
is approached from the very beginning. Because drum
ensembles, songs, and movement are taught orally, teachers
trained in notated traditions often experience a significant
paradigm shift.
Daily classes include large group instruction, small
group interaction and guided micro-teaching/leading,
and small group ensemble creation/ improvisation. You
will learn how to drum, sing, move, play xylophones
and recorders, and teach and lead others. You will experience
strategies for integrating drumming into other school
and life experiences, and you will also receive supplemental
songs and leader strategies not published in the original
curriculum.
Training
in West African and Caribbean dance will be offered
by Michelle Quigg during class and breaks.
World
Music Drumming Level 2 - (may
be repeated)
Offered at the following sites: TX, WI, WA, KS, MD, PA
For
those who have taken Level 1 (or want to repeat
Level 2) and want some reinforcement for the original
World Music Drumming curriculum plus lots of new
ensembles, more songs, movement, recorders (bring
or purchase $30 Ghanaian flute— WI, WA, KS

This course is based on a review of World Music
Drumming (Hal Leonard) by Dr. Will Schmid the new
Silver Burdett Making Music © 2005 Grades
6-8 (Pearson), World Music Drumming:
New Ensembles and Songs and More
New Ensembles and Songs due 6/07 (Hal Leonard)
by Will Schmid, and other music by the Teaching Staff.
Participants will learn how to improve their teaching
and leading of World Music Drumming. Level 2 teachers/participants
will also share strategies and materials for using WMDrumming
in community contexts such as summer workshops, spiritual
settings, adult wellness, and recreation experiences.
Additional teachers and content for Level 2 include
the music of Ghana – Sowah Mensah (WI, WA, KS),
the music of Cuba and Ghana — Josh Ryan (TX,
WI, WA, MD, PA), Kofi Gbolonyo (PA) — Ewe music
from Ghana, and Teaching Staff members: Paul Corbiere,

be repeated for a lifetime)

(Ga, Akan, Ewe peoples), xylophone ensembles from
Ghana, Ghanaian flute playing (bring or purchase $30
Ghanaian flute–WI, WA only) and Caribbean (Cuba,

somewhat each year and many participants repeat Level
3 a number of times. Level 3 is taught by Sowah Mensah
(Ghanaian Master Drummer, Macalaster College, MN–WI,
WA only) and Josh Ryan (drumming from Ghana and Caribbean
specialist, Baldwin-Wallace College, OH—WI,

Walt
Hampton Hot Marimba - (may
be repeated for a lifetime)
Offered at the following sites: WA
This workshop offered for the fourth time is taught by Walt Hampton from Seattle,
famous for popularizing the vibrant new Zimbabwean-style marimba playing found
in his publications Hot Marimba! and Marimba Mojo! (World
Music Press). Participants will experience first-hand the benefits and excitement
of Zimbabwean-style marimba music in their classroom. They will learn playing
and teaching techniques from this master teacher as they play, and also gain
background information on this fascinating music. Participants will also learn
about arranging and composing pieces for performance, and the keys to creating
a high-level performing group at their own school. Class limit: 30. Marimbas
are provided for teh class with help from Bourne
Marimbas.
Drumming
in the Spirit - (may
be repeated for a lifetime)

Music Drumming in a church, synagogue, or other spiritual
setting. The course will be based on a new book/CD,
Drumming in the Spirit (Hal Leonard) that is due
out in the early summer of 2008. The workshop can
be taken by individuals who have not attended any
of the other workshops or by those who already have
drumming experience. This workshop will be helpful

youth groups, adult social groups, and community-buidling
experiences.
Dr.
Lynn Brinckmeyer, MENC President and widely known
choral clinician, will teach two of the 90-minute
periods each day. Lynn has attended two levels or
World Music Drumming and is very familiar with our
approach. She will work on singing (including reading
through complimentary choral octavos), movement and
drumming from a variety of publishers and sources.
One period a day will be taught by Dr. Will Schmid,
author of the WMDrumming publications and the WMDrumming
Choral Series by Hal Leonard. The other period each
day will feature drumming technique and teachingt
strategies taught by some of our best Teaching Staff.
Master Drummer Sowaw Mensah will also share some
of his African Gospel compositions. Because Drumming
in the Spirit is being taught concurrently with Levels
1, 2, and 3. there will be special offerings for
